Should I go to counseling?

Should I go to counseling?

I know what it’s like asking that question for myself. Others were encouraging me to go, but I wasn’t completely sure. I still remember my first conversation with my first therapist. She encouraged me to come in for a few sessions, and see what I thought.

I am so glad I did. Those sessions put me on the path towards healing. And yes, I continued going to see that therapist beyond those first few sessions.

The truth is most, if not all people would benefit from counseling at some point if not several points in their lives! Many people have remarked they wish they started counseling earlier because of how helpful it is to them, myself included!

Some people are afraid that they will look weak or needy for going to therapy. The real strength comes from admitting and seeking help rather than going at it alone.

There are numerous possibilities for why someone may seek out counseling.

Here are some signs counseling is the next right step for you:

·     You have gone through a major life transition (death of a loved one, career change, divorce, adoption, new diagnosis, etc.).

·       You feel stuck in the same patterns and cycles.

·       You want to heal from past wounds and experiences.

·       You want to learn more about yourself and healthier ways to cope in life.

·       You want a safe space to talk to someone who is an objective third party.

·       You have experienced a traumatic event in your life.

·       You are struggling with an addiction.

·       You don’t feel like yourself and have not for a while.

·       You are experiencing relationship challenges in your marriage, with your child, or another important relationship.

We are hurt in relationships, but we are also healed in relationships. Counseling can provide the foundation for healing in a safe relationship with your therapist.

Therapists are trained professionals with education and tools to help with a variety of issues and experiences. They use evidence-based interventions to work on and achieve your goals in counseling.

While it may be intimidating finding a therapist, you can change therapists at any time if it’s not the best fit for you. Therapists do not take it personally; they want to help you find the right fit for you. Counseling provides a space to invest in yourself, your goals, and your needs. You have autonomy and choice in your counseling care.
